AI in Medicine

Supporting clinical decisions takes many forms and AI and ML are common tools used in the delivery of decision support tools. The question of whether clinicians and researchers are about to be replaced by machines often comes up. The answer is not trivial and according to the one and only Enrico Coiera “… [algorithms] are not good enough yet to contemplate complete reliance on the technology. Humans will still need to be in the decision loop.“ As technologies progress, we can see that clinicians and researchers that refuse to adopt new technologies and apply them correctly, find themselves being left out of the loop. Those that adopt new tools and adapt their practice so that they use them appropriately, not only get to keep their jobs, but become regarded as pioneers and opinion leaders.
